MUSCULOSCELETAL ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Ultrasound has evolved as a major diagnostic tool in evaluation of the musculosceletal system. Dedicated high-frequency transducers (in the range of 12-15MHz) allow detection of a variety of traumatic and inflammatory lesions, providing valuable assistance to the sports medicine and to the orthopedic specialist.

Ruptured Achilles' tendon.

Ultrasound has proved its value in the evaluation of the infant hip for developmental dysplasia (congenital dislocation of the hip)

Evaluation of the infant hip for congenital subluxation (developmental dysplasia of the hip).

Evaluation of soft tissue tumors provides valuable clues on the nature of a soft tissue clinical mass (differentiating tumors from cystic lesions).

Baker's cyst in the popliteal fossa.

Ultrasound can be used to guide a biopsy needle to obtain samples from suspicious soft-tissue masses.

Soft tissue tumour in the thigh of an elderly lady - Core needle biopsy proved a sarcoma.

A special core needle is used, attached to a biopsy gun. It is wise to use an introducing sheath to avoid seeding of the tumor along the needle tract.
